Senior Asociate Ozan Akman Delivers Guest Lecture at Özyeğin University on Artificial Intelligence and Personal Data Protection
Ozan Akman, Senior Associate at Erdem & Erdem, delivered a guest lecture on April 22, 2026, as part of the Artificial Intelligence and AI Certificate Program conducted at Özyeğin University.
During the lecture, the fundamental concepts, legal framework, and key risk areas regarding the protection of personal data in the context of data processing activities carried out through artificial intelligence systems were addressed. In this regard, the concepts of personal data, data controller, and data processor, as well as the legal grounds for data processing under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK), were examined in detail.
Furthermore, the legal bases of profiling and behavioral analysis activities in AI systems, transparency and disclosure obligations, and technical and administrative measures concerning data security were comprehensively evaluated. Particular emphasis was placed on compliance with the general principles set forth under Article 4 of the KVKK, including data minimization and purpose limitation, and the legal risks that may arise in AI-driven processes.
In addition, the risk-based classification of AI systems under the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act) and its implications for personal data protection were analyzed through practical examples. Throughout the session, practical scenarios were used to assess the obligations of data controllers and compliance processes in practice.
